Fasting before blood lipid test - Do You Need to Fast for a Cholesterol Test?

Fasting before blood lipid test - Do I need to fast for a cholesterol test? This is a common question before people do some blood cholesterol test. If you have high blood cholesterol levels that make higher your risk for cardiovascular diseases. There are no early warning symptoms of high cholesterol, so to know whether you have high blood cholesterol levels, you doctor may order a blood test to diagnosing your cholesterol levels.

Simple screening cholesterol test is done without fasting, but measures only the total cholesterol and the HDL ‘good’ cholesterol. It will give you a ballpark figure, but far from accurate.

The complete test is called a lipid profile test. This test will measure:

-Total cholesterol,

-LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol,

-HDL ‘good’ cholesterol

-Triglycerides.

If you have scheduled for lipid profile test, you should do fasting before blood lipid test. Fast before blood lipid test include, not eating anything and drinking (except for water) for 12 hours before the blood sample drawn. Vigorous exercise should be avoided for 24 hours before testing and you should tell your doctor about any medication you taking, that may affect the accuracy of the results.
