List of Cholesterol Lowering Drugs Names
If you have a problem with high cholesterol, usually doctor may advised to control your cholesterol levels by change your lifestyle, low fat food-low cholesterol or healthy eating, and exercise regularly. But sometime with the natural treatment are not able to lower your cholesterol, doctor may give you a prescription for one of these lists of cholesterol lowering drugs names.
After you have been advised by your doctor to take cholesterol-lowering medication, you will certainly want to understand your medication and the other list of cholesterol lowering drugs names choices available to you. These are list of cholesterol lowering drugs names in generally used today:
• Statins
Satins are drugs that work by constraining the enzyme HMG_CoA reductase. This enzyme regulates how quickly cholesterol is produced in the body. By slowing this enzyme, satins are able to lower LDL_cholesterol levels more effectively than many other cholesterol drugs currently on the market and also contribute to lowering triglyceride levels and even slightly increasing HDL_cholesterol levels.
All these benefits make statins among the most commonly used drugs for lowering cholesterol.
The Statins most used today are pravastatin (pravachol) , fluvastatin(lescol), lovastatin(mevacor), simvastatin (zocor), and atorvastatin(lipitor).
• Bile Acid Sequestrants
Bile acid sequestrants also knows as Bile acid resins or binder. There are three kinds of medications in this class: cholestyramine(Questran, Lo-Cholest), colestipol (Colestid), and colesevelam (WelChol). They binding themselves to the bile acids in the small intestine that contain cholesterol and then the body can get rid of the cholesterol in bowel movements rather than absorbing into circulation.
• Niacin
Niacin or nicotinic acid is Vitamin B 3. It is a vitamin that increases HDL-cholesterol, lowering triglycerides, lower LDL-cholesterol, and total cholesterol when taken in large amounts.
Patients who take this medication need to have careful doctor supervision, since nicotinic acid can have potential very serious side effects.
• Fibrates
Fibrates also known as Fibric acid derivatives. There are three kinds of medications in this class : clofibrate (Atromid), fenofibrate (Tricor), gemfibrozil (Lopid).
Primary effectiveness is lowering triglycerides. There is a lesser effect in increasing HDL levels and less effective in lowering LDL-cholesterol and for this reason are used more often by people who have heart disease rather than high cholesterol.
Cholesterol medication side effects for fibrates may occur seriously so be sure and discuss these with your doctor.
• Other drugs
Some doctors may prescribe drugs meant to offset or treat heart disease as well as lower cholesterol. In many cases, if any underlying condition may be causing the elevated cholesterol, that condition may be treated to improve cholesterol levels as well as overall health.
Whatever cholesterol lowering drugs medications you take, always do a regular blood tests to monitor how the medication work to you and to follow up the side effects.
Always remember that these cholesterol lowering drugs medications are not complete solution in themselves and not a substitute for healthy lifestyle, you still need to continue healthy eating – low cholesterol diet, and exercise regularly.
All of these will help your medication work more effectively, and make your blood cholesterol levels under control more quickly.
